Dividends & Income Investing

Learn how companies share profits with shareholders through dividends.

What is a Dividend?
Distribution of company profits to shareholders.
Safaricom pays out most of its profits as dividends. In 2024, it paid KSh 1.20 per share.

Dividend Yield
Annual dividend divided by share price.
If a stock trades at KSh 50 and pays KSh 3 in dividends, the yield is 6%.

Safaricom typically pays out ~80% of profits as dividends. A ratio above 100% is unsustainable.

Basic Analysis Skills

What is EPS?
Earnings Per Share - profit per share.
If KCB earns KSh 40 billion and has 3.2 billion shares, EPS = KSh 12.50.

What is P/E Ratio?
Price-to-Earnings ratio - how much you pay per shilling of earnings.
A P/E of 15 means you pay KSh 15 for every KSh 1 of profit. NSE average P/E is typically 8-15.

Measure of a stock's volatility relative to the market.
Safaricom has a beta of ~0.61, meaning it moves less than the overall market.

How efficiently a company uses shareholder money.
Kenyan banks like Equity and KCB historically have ROE above 20%.

How much debt a company uses.
Kenyan banks are highly leveraged (high debt), while manufacturers typically have lower ratios.
